Putting Tip
Putter loft
What is the optimal putting loft? Four degrees according to the Titleist putting laboratory which uses high speed video to analyze the ball being struck on a wide variety of different greens.
The role of loft in a putter is to merely lift the ball out of the grass enough to get it rolling. Too little loft and the ball skids too much through the grass, too much loft and the ball gets too high and hops in the air. Both circumstances compromise distance accuracy. With four degrees loft the ball lifts enough and starts its business of rolling truly to the hole.
Therefore if you like to forward press your putter and hit with your hands 3 or 4 degrees ahead of the clubhead at impact then you may actually need a putter with 7 or 8 degrees of loft. The correct lie angle is also important. A degree to upright and the putter face will go slightly left,a degree flat and the face will go slightly to the right.
