PGA Pro   Practice Tip

Sense the clubhead

Here’s a drill that will give you great feedback for shotmaking as well as heighten your sense of awarenesss to the clubhead during the swing. This is also a great way to warm up before each round and ensures you’re in the proper frame of mind for each shot and not swinging at the ball with no regard to the outcome.

Start off with a 7 iron and take several full practice swings in slow motion. Then try to go even slower. The first time you try this drill “slow” is usually not slow enough. See how slow you can get. Next try to hit some shots with this super slow motion swing. If you normally hit a seven iron 150 yards then try to hit shots only 75 to 100 yards with the slow motion swing. Try to hit some small fades and draws sensing the clubhead at all times during your swing. In sensing the clubhead you must feel the angle of the clubface, as well as the length and path the clubhead is travelling. Next , make some real time practice swings still sensing the clubhead. Then hit some more fades and draws with your real time swing. Repeat this drill with the driver. When out on the golf course, try to sense the clubhead to shape all your shots and you’ll play much better.
