PGA Pro   Playing Tip

Stay focused

When the match is close and the pressure is intense in your foursomes’ $2.00 nassau, you need to remain in control. When the shots become more crucial you can remain in control by staying focused and sticking to your preshot routine. By sticking to a good preshot routine you signal to your body and brain a certain trust and confidence whereby tension and doubt are not allowed to creep in to either. Here’s what I feel to be a good preshot routine:

1. Stand behind the ball and assess your shot. This is decision time and you need to have in your mind your plan before you address the ball.
2. Pull the club you want
3. Take one practice swing
4. Take a deep breath
5. Line up the club and take your grip
6. Place your feet and take one or two looks while waggling to stay loose then swing

It is important to note that after you have made your decision and addressed the ball, that you don’t take much time to pull the trigger. Stay committed and swing, don’t second guess your club selection and don’t stand rigid like a statue while addressing the ball. If you feel you’ve deviated from your routine, step back and try again. Performance under pressure is sure to follow. Good Golfing.
